Language features II - Antithesis

Antithesis

What is it?
An Antithesis is a person or thing that is the direct opposite of someone or something else. 2 ideas put together to contrast.

What is it's effect / why  is it used?
It is used to emphasize the contrast between phrases or clauses.

Find the well known example.

Language features - Anaphora

Anaphora

What is it?
reference to already introduced referents, needs to be the same to antecedent.
E.g. Peel and slice six potatoes, put them in cold water.
Other than using the word 'Potatoe' twice, you can use the word 'them' since it also refers to the word potatoe.

What is the effect / why is it used?
Anaphora has the effect of engaging your audience in a particular emotional experience.
It is used to appeal to the emotions of the audience, in order to persuade, inspire, motivate, and encourage them.

Find a well known example:
There are many examples of anaphora in Elie Wiesel's book "Night,"
In Ch 2, Mrs. Schacter repeats the phrase, "Fire ! see a fire! Look at this fire!" quite often. It made the people on the little railcar very irritated. Anaphora is important in this book because it lets the reader know the importance of the quote.
